Downtown: walkable, and close to the train
Downtown is the best base if you don’t have a car. It’s the most walkable part of Anchorage, with the Anchorage Museum, the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and a dense cluster of restaurants nearby. The Alaska Railroad depot sits at the edge of Downtown, which makes it an easy base before an early train to Denali or Seward.
The trade-off is parking: street parking is metered and limited, so confirm parking if you’re arriving with a car.
Midtown: easy with a car
Midtown is commercial and car-oriented, with many national hotel chains and restaurants. Its big advantage is parking — many hotels have large free lots, which matters if you’re driving a rental car or a larger vehicle.
Near the airport and Spenard
The Spenard area sits next to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Lake Hood, one of the busiest seaplane bases in the world. Hotels here are practical for red-eye arrivals and dawn departures, and many run airport shuttles. Some vacation rentals here even cater to people who come to watch floatplanes.
